Syphilis outbreak in Pontotoc County

Ada — Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) has identified a syphilis outbreak in Pontotoc County. Michael Echelle, Pontotoc County Health Department director, said 10 cases of the sexually transmitted bacterial infection have been identified in county residents between the ages of 15 and 21. “While this outbreak is alarming, the good news is that syphilis can be identified by examination and testing and cured with antibiotics," Echelle said. He said the health department requests all county residents who are having unprotected sex be tested for syphilis.  Pontotoc County Health Department offers free screening Monday through Friday.
