Wimbledon 2011: defending champion Serena Williams fights back tears as victory ends nightmare

Serena Williams has never wept on court before. Not even when she won her first major, the US Open in 1999, has the big beast of the women’s game shown the remotest hint of vulnerability.
But on Centre Court on Tuesday, she greeted her 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory over France’s Aravane Rezai by burying her head in her towel and engaging in a full-on, shoulder-shaking, Bambi’s Mother death-scene blub. “I’m not a crier,” she smiled after her tears had dried. “I think it was something in my eye.” Culled from The Telegraph (online)
